Police Verification to be Scrapped by Reforms Commission

Police Verification to be Scrapped by Reforms Commission. Bangladesh Public Administration Reforms Commission is preparing to recommend the elimination of police verification for government job applicants in its proposed reforms. As a result of this reform, the hiring process will be streamlined and unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles will be removed.

Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, chairman of the commission, says the police verification process is unnecessary. Every citizen has fundamental rights, including the right to obtain essential documents like passports without excessive bureaucracy.

As a citizen, you are entitled to a passport. What is the purpose of police verification? In England, for example, passports simply arrive at your post office,” Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury told journalists at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Another major reform the commission is advocating is a merit-based promotion system for deputy and joint secretaries. Promotion will require at least 70 marks in an examination for government officers under the proposed reform.

The exam must be passed with a score of 70 in order for someone to be promoted. As a result of this reform, inter-cadre discrimination will be addressed and fairness will be ensured. A candidate who meets the 70-mark threshold will be able to join the administration cadre,” said Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury.

The reform aims to ensure that promotions are based on capability rather than administrative preferences and favoritism.

Furthermore, the commission is focusing on the Right to Information (RTI) Act in addition to recruitment and promotion reforms. To ensure government transparency and accountability, they plan to propose stronger implementation measures.

The RTI Act is very important to us. Each district and division will be overseen by a designated officer. The act has not yet been implemented as effectively as it should,” Muyeed said.

Citizens will be able to access government information more effectively when the RTI Act is enforced more effectively.

Government efficiency and transparency are expected to improve significantly with the abolition of police verification, the implementation of a merit-based promotion system, and stricter implementation of the RTI Act. As a result of these reforms, outdated bureaucratic processes will be eliminated, merit-based promotions will be encouraged, and public information will be more accessible.

These recommendations will lead to a more modern, fair, and accountable public administration system in Bangladesh if approved and implemented.

Bangladesh public sector is set to undergo a progressive transformation with recommendations from the Public Administration Reform Commission. A more efficient and transparent government will be achieved by removing police verification for government jobs, ensuring fair promotions, and strengthening the RTI Act.
